At this website you will find information about the UK based AUNT-SUE  project. The AUNT-SUE team aims to develop and test sustainable policies and practices that will deliver effective socially inclusive design and operation in transport and the related public realm from macro down to micro level. AUNT-SUE is producing a "tool-kit"; that can be used at different scales down to the micro-level of streets, vehicles and facilities such as bus stops, signage and ticket machines. Central to the approach is the integration of policy, design and operations throughout the whole journey environment.

2005 White House Conference on Aging

The United States White House Conference on Aging occurs once a decade to make aging policy recommendations to the President and Congress, and to assist the public and private sectors in promoting dignity, health, independence and economic security of current and future generations of older persons. The last Conference was held December 11 to 14, 2005 in Washington, DC

International Association of Public Transport (UITP)

UITP represents over 2,900 urban, local, regional and national mobility actors from more than 90 countries on all continents. It brings together operating companies, local, regional and national authorities; the service and supply industry; and research institutes, academics and consultants.

UITP covers all modes of public transport - metro, bus, light rail, regional and suburban railways, and waterborne transport. It also represents collective transport in a broader sense. It provides a range of services and undertakes wide ranging research.

Social Disadvantage Research Centre (UK)

The Social Disadvantage Research Centre’s focus is on the concept and measurement of poverty, especially in small areas and over time. It has won the UK’s contract to revise the national index of deprivation for England, and contracts for Welsh and Northern Ireland Indices following competitive tender. The research constitutes a major step forward in the use of data. The techniques to construct ward level population estimates, necessary as denominators for deprivation measures, have been acknowledged as ‘path breaking’ by academic demographers. The index research generated extensive further work and international interest.

The Institute of Transport Studies (ITS) (Monash) aims to progress transport knowledge and practice to contribute to the prosperity and sustainability of industry and the wider community.

Transport research at ITS (Monash) is focused into four program streams, each covering a range of topics: travel demand; transport operations; transport and traffic planning and management; and public transport planning and management.

The United Kingdom’s Social Exclusion Unit

The UK Government created the Social Exclusion Unit in 1997 to reflect its determination to take a cross-government approach to improving the life chances of the most disadvantaged in our society. Since then, the number of children living in poverty has fallen by 800,000, more people have been brought back into employment, the number of rough sleepers has fallen by three quarters, and teenage pregnancies are at their lowest level since the mid 1980s and the rate among under-16s has now fallen by more than 15 per cent

The Transport Planning and Policy Group at the University of Ulster (UK)

The Transport Planning and Policy Group is led by Professor Julian Hine who holds the Translink Chair in Transport at the University of Ulster. The group conducts research across a number of highly relevant policy areas. Work has been funded by the Scottish Executive, EPSRC, Rees Jeffreys Road Fund and other charitable trusts.

The group's research is focused on the areas of public transport; social exclusion and transport; transport policy; planning for green modes of transport, pedestrian behaviour and modelling; land use planning and demand management; an application of new technology to the management of transport systems.

The Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) (USA)

TCRP provides a range of transport information to assist service providers, consultants or suppliers. TCRP provides the tools that may be needed to innovate and solve problems in the transportation industry. It provides research reports to cover subjects with a wide variety of applications reflecting the diverse nature of project work undertaken on behalf of the industry. It also provides a

  • Synthesis Series which is a summary of existing practice in a specific technical area which is based on a literature search and a survey of relevant agencies;
  • Legal Research Digests to address current legal issues in the transportation industry; and

TCRP Publications

Griffith University Urban Research Program (Australia)

The Urban Research Program (URP) was established in 2003, and is part of Griffith University, Queensland. The goal of the URP is to become a national centre for urban research

The URP has identified urban governance, transportation, rural and peri urban landscape management, urban liveability, housing, infrastructure, ecology, urban economy and health as research areas of strategic importance.

The Bus Association Victoria (BAV) is the peak bus and coach industry body in Victoria, Australia. When it comes to transport planning, let's not "re-invent the wheels". The VLGA's Thinking Transport website provides an easy way for local governments to share their documentation on a wide range of local government transport initiatives, from long-term strategies to one-off events.

Thinking Transport also provides quick access to a database of Victorian Government programs and projects that support local governments in their efforts to provide better mobility for their communities.

UK Department of Transport

The UK Department works to deliver a transport system which balances the needs of the economy, the environment and society. It provides leadership across the transport sector to achieve its objectives, working with regional, local and private sector partners to deliver many of the services. Metropolitan Transport Forum (Victoria Australia)

The Metropolitan Transport Forum (MTF) is an advocacy group comprising members from Melbourne metropolitan local government, associate members representing transport companies, and participants from the State Government and environment groups.

The MTF endeavours to promote effective, efficient and equitable transport in metropolitan Melbourne by providing a forum for debate, research and policy development, and by disseminating information to improve transport choices.

Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) (Australia)

As the peak body of the social and community services sector in Victoria, VCOSS pursues just and fair social outcomes through policy development and collaborative advocacy. To address social disadvantage it has a number of key policy areas including children, young people and families; people with disabilities; housing and homelessness; Indigenous issues; primary and community health, transport; and welfare reform.

Victorian Government Department of Infrastructure (Australia)

The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) is the lead provider of essential infrastructure in Victoria, Australia. The Department’s Public Transport Division coordinates the public transport network which includes train, tram, bus, taxi and ferry services in Victoria.

In 2006 the Victorian Government has released its transport policy, Meeting Our Transport Challenges which provides a strategic plan for Victoria’s transport system and outlines the Government’s short, medium and long-term transport priorities. DOI is responsible for the implementation of this policy.
