Abstract
Although public transit use has increased lately, public transit services remain notoriously poor in rural areas of the United Kingdom. This paper explores the use of innovation in public transit, to improve accessibility and quality of life for rural residents. It looks particularly at the demand responsive use of shared taxis in Europe. It discusses barriers to instituting shared taxis in rural areas, and offers recommendations for countering these barriers.
