Abstract

The reference system PAVIP®, installed in the Swiss city Sankt Gallen, enhances the mobility of visually impaired users of public transportation in such that approaching vehicles can be identified, commanded to stop, door open commands can be applied and information about the line net and the immediate environment is made accessible. PAVIP works with wireless interfaces, allowing various end user devices to interact. For the purpose of platform introduction, a dedicated end user device called Milestone has been developed. The concept of PAVIP has been verified by a field trial in 2004; official opening date of PAVIP is summer 2007. The PAVIP reference platform is carried by the public transportation provider of Sankt Gallen (VBSG), the Swiss Federation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBV), the Swiss National Association of and for the Blind (SNAB), the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs (EDI) and the engineering offices Gorba AG and Bones GmbH.
