Abstract
The audit is designed to assist the provision of public transport policies, as it identifies and explores the factors which affect women's experience of public transport. It translated the findings into a checklist by which to measure the usefulness and acceptability to women of the public transport which might be offered or proposed. The provision of public transport policies and services which meet the criteria will also be more attractive to men and children. The reverse, building public transport systems around the needs of men, has not produced a system which meets the needs of women. This is a social exclusion, environmental pollution and a commercial matter. Women are the main users of public transport and nearly all the increased car-use is attributable to women. They are sending a message to policy-makers. [Country: UK]
