Abstract
The specific aim of this study was to gather evidence on transport initiatives which reduce social exclusion in rural areas in order to promote the benefits of such projects to mainstream funders. The study shows that the proportion of rural population over 65 years of age is increasing and bringing many of mobility difficulties most commonly found amongst this group. There are half a million (14%, Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs [Defra], 2004) of rural households that do not own a car or have no access to a car at the time they need to travel because it is in use by another member of the household.
