Abstract

This discussion paper seeks to provide a snapshot of public transport use by income group, with an emphasis on identifying the proportions of low income users by mode of travel. The paper aims to promote further discussion on public transport fare pricing in NSW, and encourage more careful decisions on future fare increases, particularly those above the underlying rate of inflation. Naturally, further research in this area is needed and encouraged, particularly where it is able to improve our understanding of the impacts of fare increases on low income household types, and promote the development of fare pricing policy that is able to promote increased patronage on public transport by all income groups.
