Abstract
Signs of stainless steel plates with names and orientations of the streets in braille and large print were fitted on the signal light posts at pedestrian crossings to aid persons with visual impairment in independent travel. They were tested with the help of the Hong Kong Transport Department. The large print and braille messages on the plates were in two languages : English and Cantonese. Surveys on the usefulness of the signs were conducted among the public including the sighted and the visually impaired, and suggestions for improvement were collected from organizations of and for the visually impaired. The sighted and visually impaired persons participated in the survey, the representatives of the organizations of and for persons with visual impairment, and the government were all in favour of using the signs to enhance the mobility of persons with visual impairment and promote social awareness of equal opportunity for the disabled. The design of the sign, results of the survey, recommendations for improvement and latest progress of the project are discussed in this paper.
